‘The Office’ Convention Brings Joy, Creed to Scranton
This past weekend brought not only about a million inches of rain but also the first-ever Office Convention to Scranton, Pennsylvania. If you want to know what it was like, just imagine what the first Star Trek convention was like, before twenty years of insanity sucked all the joy out of it for the actors. Then add Creed.
From all reports, actors from The Office — and pretty much everyone not named Jim, Pam, Dwight, or Michael showed up — were completely blown away by the reception they received. “We’re like the Beatles,†both Ed Helms and Angela Kinsey were overheard saying during the weekend, and the accounts of the many bloggers attending seem to back that up.
As far as we can tell, a lot of the weekend consisted of cast members singing. BWE captured video of Helms singing “Take a Chance on Me.†Show Tracker’s Claire Zulkey caught Kate Flannery (Meredith) dedicating “Hit Me With Your Best Shot†to Michael Scott, and Craig Robinson belting out Radiohead’s “Creep.†But apparently the convention belonged to Creed, who sang with a number of bands, stayed in character all weekend, and at one point speculated on why his character has four toes on one foot (something about being raised by a Chinese family).
Aside from that? “Office Olympics,†a ton of homemade T-shirts, Mindy Kaling quips, a costume competition, and endless karaoke. For a crowd described by Zulkey as “Comic Book Guy, but with a social life,†it seems like this was a hell of a lot of fun.
