Honestly, ‘Rolling Stone,’ Is This the Second-Best Song of 2007?

Rolling Stone announced their list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007 this morning, and all-in-all it strikes us as pretty reasonable, despite the egregious omission of R. Kelly’s “Sex Planet.†The magazine’s decision to award top honors to Jay-Z’s awesome “Roc Boys†over Rihanna’s “Umbrella†is already stirring some controversy, but it’s fine by us. The one thing we can’t figure out, though, is why Randy Newman’s “A Few Words in Defense of Our Country†comes in at No. 2. The track is just Newman, half-singing his January Times op-ed piece over some Randy Newman–y piano chords. We’ve got nothing against the guy, but certainly someone besides Jay-Z must’ve written a better song than this in 2007, right?
