Tagline: “To know the future, visit the past.â€
Translation: Get ready for more flashbacks than a season-one episode of Lost.
The verdict: The teaser for this fall’s adaptation of the sixth Harry Potter novel plays it spooky and straight, focusing on Harry’s dips into the Pensieve to experience the life and times of Tom Riddle, with only tiny glimpses of the movie’s present-day story. (That’s fitting, since Voldemort’s chilling origin is the part of the novel that sticks in the memory, rather than the book’s comparatively pedestrian tales of Hogwarts romance.) Front and center in the teaser is Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, Ralph Fiennes’s nephew, as li’l Voldemort, and he looks just as creepy as we’d hoped. In fact, the entire trailer looks even better than we expected, lending credence to the notion that as the Potter movies move further away from those first, awful Chris Columbus films, they’re becoming better and better, approaching the artistic heights of the books themselves.
