Upside-Down Photographer Robin Rhode Plays Billiards on Ceiling

If you were to stroll the concrete hoods of some of the poorer sections of South Africa, you’d probably find a few people crouching, poking a big stick at a table full of small red balls. Billiards are apparently the unofficial national pastime of South Africa, played not only in smoky pubs but in the streets, the way scrappy boys play stellar soccer in the favelas of Brazil. They don’t play it upside down, however, as Robin Rhode might have us believe in his animated exhibit on show at Perry Rubenstein Gallery through August 13. —Emma Pearse
