Ever since her disastrous, zombified performance at the 2007 Video Music Awards, the team of handlers that manages Britney Spears has been very reluctant to put the former teen starlet on live television. And while she did an okay job of playing the willing recipient of a series of Russell Brand’s flirtatious ad libs during the 2008 VMAs, her management team clearly is still not confident that Britney can pull off an appearance on television. Considering she’s performing (if not necessarily singing) each night in front of 15,000 people on her Circus tour, this seems slightly anachronistic to us, but what do we know? As promised, Britney Spears made an appearance on the Late Show With David Letterman last night to read the evening’s Top Ten list, but unlike just about every other special guest we’ve seen do the same thing, Britney did not appear live on the stage of the Ed Sullivan Theater with Dave. Rather, her wooden line readings of the “Top Ten Ways the Country Would Be Different If Britney Spears Were President†were seemingly pretaped, possibly even at another location entirely (sadly, probably not Rupert’s Deli). That said, the bikini-clad Spears certainly looked fantastic, so at least she’s got that going for her!
