Tracey Baran’s life — chunks of it, at least — will be on display at Leslie Tonkonow Projects starting tomorrow. Baran, who died last year at 33 after a brief illness, photographed her naked father slumped in a bathtub and her gray-haired mother snuggled into the neck of a horse with a vast snowy landscape behind her. After her first New York solo show, in 1998, the artist — who has been compared to Nan Goldin and Ryan McGinley, but also to William Eggleston — saw her reputation soar. She garnered six solo shows, including a major exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago in 2002. These fifteen photos, full of humor but also some horror, will show through October 17.
