Just a few weeks back, the Consumer Electronics Show introduced the world to the expensive new 3-D televisions we’ll soon be socially pressured into buying. But the Grammys are looking to get the 3-D home-entertainment revolution kicked off a little early: The awards show, going down in L.A. on January 31, is planning a three-dimensional tribute to Michael Jackson.
The centerpiece will be a video for “Earth Song,†originally produced for Jackson’s London concerts (and seen briefly in This Is It), which is, appropriately in these post-Avatar times, a 3-D call to arms for the preservation of the environment. (By the way, you can get 3-D glasses at your neighborhood Target between January 24 and the 31.) Grammys co-executive producer Ken Ehrlich says, “There are these incredible images of the beauties of nature, and then they are seen through the eyes of a little girl, and that girl falls asleep and when she wakes up, she is witness to the destruction of nature … It’s all about questioning what our values are.†Also, Usher, Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, and Smokey Robinson will be performing alongside the video, but they will not be in 3-D.
Wait, wait, wait — so all we’re really getting is a preachy, not-new music video and Carrie Underwood in regular-ass 2-D? The phrase “3-D tribute to Michael Jackson†sounded a lot more exciting a few minutes ago, huh?
