Did Green Zone Kill the Bourne Franchise?

Paul Greengrass’s Matt Damon–starring Green Zone cost $130 million and has earned only $15 million since it opened Friday — but will its spectacular failure cost Universal more than just the movie’s budget and a chance to outrage Scientologists? Studio execs are blaming their ousted predecessors who green-lit Zone in the first place, but since they were the ones who tried to market the Iraq-set, WMD-focused actioner as just another entry in Greengrass’s Damon–starring Bourne franchise, the Big Picture’s Patrick Goldstein wonders if their bait and switch might’ve made selling future Bourne movies harder.

Anyway, Greengrass has made explicitly clear that he’s done making Bourne movies for a while, so by the time that’s changed, everybody will have probably forgotten about Green Zone and they can just reboot the series with Taylor Lautner in the title role, and any marketing problems will simply disappear.
