Lil Wayne Has A Good Excuse For Missing Court

Lil Wayne’s nine days into his sentence at Rikers, but just ‘cause he’s locked down doesn’t mean he can’t still be getting into trouble with the law: A Superior Court Judge in Yuma, Arizona, has issued a bench warrant for his arrest after Wayne missed a court hearing (you know, on account of that whole being in jail in another state thing). The proceeding is related to a 2008 arrest at a border checkpoint near Yuma, where Wayne was found with cocaine, Ecstasy, and a handgun, and later charged with possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, misconduct involving weapons, and possession of drug paraphernalia (whew!). He’s pleaded not guilty to all charges, and a March 30 trial had been set, but Wayne’s lawyer James Tilson had sensibly requested that it be pushed back until after Wayne got out of jail. The folks in Yuma ain’t hearing that, though. (They don’t mess around in Arizona, by the way: DMX just got six months for a variety of offenses.)

If the bench warrant isn’t withdrawn, Wayne could be taken into custody as soon as he exits Rikers, and would have to post bail of $150,000. We’d assume Wayne would have to step foot in Arizona in order for the bench warrant to be effective, but also figure that Wayne will report willingly. The bottom line? Weezy could be going away for longer than the eight months with good behavior that he’s currently working on. Then again, all of our legal knowledge comes from Ally McBeal, so please feel free to correct us.
