When we caught up with author Paul Auster at the Wooster (Support) Group’s first benefit art auction this week at the Sean Kelly Gallery, we wondered if he had ever been approached to write something outside of his typical genre: “Yeah. For some reason photographers ask me to write prefaces to their books all the time,†he told us, while standing in a gallery space that was full of photographers and artists. “I must have had a hundred requests over the years. I have no idea why. Maybe because of the movie Smoke, where one of the characters is taking the same picture every day for twenty years. I don’t really know.†See more in our Party Lines slideshow.
