It’s hard to believe that the Neue Galerie’s major retrospective of Otto Dix, the Weimar-era German painter and luminary of the New Objectivity movement, is the first-ever North American–museum exhibition devoted exclusively to his work: His witty, brilliant oil portraits are highly stylized, titillatingly grotesque, and endlessly fascinating. Get close-up and queasy with the green-skinned, big-eared Dr. Stadelmann; the slinky, cinch-mouthed dancer Anita Berber; the catlike eyes of an anonymous, voluptuous middle-aged woman spread out over a leopard skin; and even a somewhat self-deprecating rendition of Dix himself enjoying a moment of idyll with his young family. On view through August 30.
