Gosling’s a Go: Ryan Gosling will star opposite Steve Carell in an untitled comedy — directed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra — about a father (Carell) in the midst of a marital crisis. (We previewed the script back in January.) Gosling will play the “suave best friend†of Carell, whose life falls apart as he attempts to stay on good terms with his children. Carell is eighteen years older than Gosling, which we suppose makes this the rare bromance cougar movie. [Variety]
Stone-r Flick: Oliver Stone will direct and produce Savages, based on an upcoming Don Winslow novel about two friends from Laguna Beach who share the same girlfriend and a thriving pot business. After the girl is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel, the boys must come up with a plan to get her back. Stone is planning to make this his follow up to Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. Sounds sort of like what would happen if the cast of The Hills accidentally waltzed onto an episode of Weeds. [Deadline]
More Smurfs: A day after Neil Patrick Harris was announced as the lead live-action character in the live-action/animated hybrid Smurfs: The Movie, a diverse foursome are attached to voice the animated Smurfs: Jonathan Winters will take on Papa Smurf and George Lopez will voice Grouchy Smurf, while pop star Katy Perry and Alan Cumming are in talks to voice Smurfette and Gutsy Smurf, respectively. We love you, Neil, but if Smurfette has any songs, we’ll be sitting this one out. [Variety]
Benicio Knows Jack: Benicio Del Toro has signed on to play undercover FBI agent Jack Garcia in the film Making Jack Falcone, written by Peter Buchman (Che). Garcia was a Cuban-born agent who was extremely successful at pretending to be Italian, taking down 39 members of New York’s crime family over his career. So you could say the skilled Italian impostor was kind of like an old-time version of JWOWW and Snooki. [Deadline]
King Him: Matthew Greenberg, who adapted Stephen King’s 1408, has now signed on to bring King’s Pet Sematary back to the big screen. Pet tells the story of a family that moves to Maine and discovers they live near a pet cemetery on an ancient burial ground; when the family’s toddler son is killed in an accident, he is resurrected as a demon when he is brought to the cemetery. A movie frightening to both pet lovers and spelling sticklers. [HR]
Yes He Caan: Scott Caan (Ocean’s Eleven, Entourage) will join the cast of CBS’ remake of Hawaii Five-O as Danny ‘Danno’ Williams, a divorced New Jersey cop who transfers to Hawaii to be near his 7-year-old daughter. We see riiiight though it; you think he would have moved if his daughter lived in Iowa? [HR]
