Industry Roundup: Cyrus, McConaughey

Just Being Miley: Miley Cyrus’ next album, Can’t Be Tamed, will be released June 22. The title track, the album’s first single, will premiere on MySpace this Friday, before hitting radio May 3. The song is described as a “self-empowering song in which Miley asserts that she has to stay true to herself in relationships,†according to her label, “and it is sure to become an anthem among her legions of fans around the world.†So parents, don’t be alarmed if your daughters come out of their bedrooms wearing booty shorts and asking for pole-dancing lessons starting this weekend. Pedal to the Metal: Lionsgate has picked up the domestic distribution rights to The Lincoln Lawyer, a legal thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillippe and William H. Macy. The film, based on Michael Connelly’s best-selling novel, centers on a criminal defense attorney (McConaughey) who operates out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car. No doubt you can find it parked at the beach. [Variety]

If You Like It…: Paramount is moving ahead with a new installment of their horror franchise The Ring. The third film in the series will of course be filmed in 3D and, ingeniously, will be called Ring 3D. David Loucka (Dream House) will write the script. Though the plot has not yet been determined, “One potential scenario involves teens finding a VHS player that still works.†That is, after the teens tweet all their friends to figure out what a “VHS player†is. Connelly Mulling Comedy: Jennifer Connelly has been offered a role in the upcoming Ron Howard “cheaters†comedy starring Vince Vaughn, Kevin James and Winona Ryder. Connelly would play the wife of Vaughn’s character, who can’t decide whether he should tell his best friend (James) that his wife (Ryder) is cheating on him. We are more interested by this world in which Vince Vaughn and Kevin James have managed to score wives as sophisticated and stunning as Connelly and Ryder. [Deadline]

Dueling Dramas: FX has picked up the pilot to Outlaw Country, a crime thriller/family drama set in Nashville which is focused on “southern organized crime and Nashville royalty,†with Shooter Jennings on board as an executive consultant and music supervisor. Believe it or not, Epix is already developing a drama pilot called Tough Trade which is also “a family drama set against Nashville’s music sceneâ€; theirs has T-Bone Burnett attached as a executive producer and executive musical producer. May the best complex Nashville-based family drama win, as they say. [Variety]

Bands Create Carnival: Shinedown will headline the first “Carnival of Madness†tour, a 27-date outing that begins July 16 in Jacksonville. Organizers hope the tour - which will also feature Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd and Sevendust - will become a yearly event. The tour promises to be similar to Britney Spears’ Circus Tour in theme only. Meet Complete: Endgame Entertainment is bringing You Complete Us to the big screen. The rom com, from brothers Jim and Brian Kehoe, will focus on a couple who tries to get their best friends back together because their own marriage is falling apart without them. With this as a title, you just know the promotion is gonna consist of one cutesy pun after another. [HR]
