Jay Leno the New King of Late Night

As it turns out, nothing, not even months of bad press resulting from a failed prime-time talk show and ousting his onetime successor Conan O’Brien from the Tonight Show desk, can keep Jay Leno from winning in late night. Only a month after returning to his old time slot, Leno’s Tonight Show has gone back to its dominant position in the ratings, beating out David Letterman, whose Late Show has slipped to second place. Leno’s victory is kind of a squeaker, though — in the month since his return to 11:35, he has reclaimed only 82 percent of his old audience, and the ratings gap between the Tonight Show and the Late Show is fairly slim.
