Marvel Comics has announced that it will have an app ready for the iPad’s first week on sale, produced by comiXology. The app will allow the comics giant to present individual issues of titles in a reader interface designed for the device. If the iPad is a success and this app catches on, it could potentially change the business model of the comics industry and signal a shift in favor of digital distribution of periodicals over paper pamphlets. This is great news for comics fans who are tech geeks and/or environmentalists, and terrible news for anyone out there who can’t imagine a comic book experience that does not involve plastic bags and cardboard slips.
