The subjects of Alison Elizabeth Taylor’s large intarsia wood inlay “paintings†bear little resemblance to the arabesques and foliage popular in the age of Louis XIV’s court. Instead, she reinvents the luxurious craft by focusing on the bleak details — boarded-up windows, shotgun holes — of foreclosed, derelict properties in outer Las Vegas. The artworks are not only affecting, but also formally impressive: Taylor makes the most of her medium’s natural grain and color, as with the ominous cloud looming over Security House’s grim landscape. The result is a rich and highly stylized body of work. Through June 19 at the James Cohan Gallery, New York City.
