Two days after he called for a boycott of Newsweek in light of an article he described as “blatantly homophobic,” Glee creator Ryan Murphy has written a second open letter, in which he reveals that he has since spoken to the article’s author, Ramin Setoodeh. Murphy writes that Setoodeh has taken him up on his offer to visit Glee’s set and “observe [their] creative process” in order to see how they “construct a TV show dedicated exclusively to the idea of inclusiveness and acceptance for all.” In addition to visiting the show’s writers’ room, Murphy writes that Setoodeh will be invited to watch how they cast the show as well, a process in which “actors are encouraged to read for ALL roles, no matter what their sexual orientation, color, or gender.”
Murphy writes that while Newsweek did contact him to “say they are big fans of [Glee],” he does not believe the magazine has offered a “substantial articulate response” for the article, titled “Straight Jacket,” in which Setoodeh discussed gay actors playing straight, specifically calling out Promises, Promises’ Sean Hayes and Glee’s Jonathan Groff, both openly gay, for what he argued were unconvincing portrayals of straight characters.
