While international box office from the June 11 World Cup kickoff to Monday is down 35 percent compared to the same period last year, that is still not as bad as Hollywood anticipated. Hooray! Major names like Iron Man 2, Sex and the City 2, and Toy Story 3 all managed to do big numbers internationally despite the rest of the world’s insane passion for soccer, with the latter pulling in an impressive $62 million in notoriously soccer-crazed Latin America. But what was burned by the tournament? Knight and Day! Variety reports that the flick “earned solid results in non-World Cup countries†(as in, countries where not everyone watches every game) “South Korea and Russia,†insinuating it flopped elsewhere because of stupid soccer. See, it really wasn’t Tom Cruise’s fault. [Variety]
