Even Europeans Turned Off by Mel Gibson Now

Regardless of whether those phone calls were part of an extortion attempt, Mel Gibson’s career as a movie star in America is probably over. But in today’s Times, Michael Cieply and Brooks Barnes take stock his prospects overseas, where not even the anti-Semitic comments he made during his 2006 DUI arrest have hurt him much. So will foreign film buyers overlook his racial epithets and death-threatening, or has Mel really crapped the jacuzzi this time?

On the bright side, though, he may still have fans in Japan (“Mel Gibson is still widely known as an actor and director among Japanese movie fans,†says a buyer there) and in Latin America, where not even Mel’s simultaneously demanding oral sex and threatening arson can take the shine off of Apocalypto, which was a big hit there. Hope they like The Beaver!
