NY Mag has a great new profile of The Office’s Mindy Kaling, in which she hints that she’ll be leaving the show with Carell. Which makes sense! She’s a stellar writer and should have a great career ahead of her writing and acting in her own projects. She’s currently writing The Low Self Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie for Mandate Pictures and she’s got a book of humor essays coming out as well.
“This isn’t some big scoop or anything, but I can see this season being my last. Right now, I’m hankering for new adventures … Ninety percent of the time I’m having romantic-comedy fantasies in which I’m wearing little pencil skirts and hurrying down to the subway.â€
As for what she’ll do next, she wants to write the Great American RomCom:
Kaling’s goal is to write the classic romantic comedy for her generation, where women are as into the NBA and true crime as they are into searching for love or the perfect pair of shoes. “I’ve led kind of an interesting life, and I drink and party and I am funny and have a good group of friends. And I wonder, why isn’t that on TV or in the movies?â€
How great is this? If anyone can save the modern romantic comedy, with their pandering scripts, flat characters and predictable storylines, it’s Kaling. And let’s be honest: she’s basically been working on the Jim and Pam romcom for a while now, and she’s proven that she can write relatable relationships without getting shmaltzy. So here’s to Mindy’s next step: rescuing an entire movie genre singlehandedly. No pressure!
