Some awards organizations just can’t take a hint. After Jean-Luc Godard fled the news of his honorary Oscar and intimated that he wouldn’t accept it in person, the Academy refused to take non for an answer, assuring audiences that the French director would, in fact, show up in Los Angeles to claim his prize. Maybe not so much, the defeat-admitting Academy announced today: “Following a two-month-long cordial exchange of correspondence with Academy president Tom Sherak, Jean-Luc Godard has regretfully notified Sherak that he will not be able to attend the November 13th Governors Awards and receive his Honorary Award in person.” Now would be the perfect time to plan a surprise party-crash, J-L.
