The success of Mad Men and America’s resultant sixties fervor makes the Starz network pickup of period drama Magic City, set in a gritty and glittering Miami hotel of the same era, a pretty safe bet. Because we can always appreciate a broad, obvious historical reference, we’re excited to hear that the narrative begins just as Fidel Castro takes control of Cuba. Series creator and Miami native Mitch Glazer makes a good pitch. “Miami in the early ‘60s was a tropical crossroads, America’s Casablanca,†said Glazer. “The Rat Pack, CIA, the mob, JFK and anti-Castro warriors, all hanging out in the same Collins Avenue nightclub.†Fine! We’ll look out for this one in 2012. [Deadline]
