Spider-Man Is Currently the Highest-Grossing Show on Broadway

Director Julie Taymor.

To put it gently, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has had some problems. Performing in it broke one actor’s rib, and concussed another. Preview performances have been canceled. And the show has been dubbed “crippling shit.†But what are little things like those to hold Spider-Man back? Broadway’s most expensive musical ever, still in previews, was last week’s highest-grossing show in ticket sales, knocking Wicked from its perch by $58, grossing $1,588,514. The show played to full houses in a theater with 1,930 seats. Maybe all press really is good press. [ArtsBeat/NYT]
