CNN reports: “A task force made up of local and federal law enforcement agencies is actively pursuing leads into the 1997 slaying of hip hop artist Christopher Wallace Â… According to one law enforcement source, the investigation into the 13-year-old unsolved case was ‘reinvigorated’ months ago as a result of new information, but the source would not elaborate further because of the ongoing investigation that includes the Los Angeles Police Department, L.A. County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI.â€
That’s the extent of original information, so don’t expect a bonkers brand-new theory. As elucidated in Randal Sullivan’s 2005 Rolling Stone article (mandatory reading if you have even a passing interest in this), Suge Knight is still depicted as the orchestrator, with a few suspects — at least one a former LAPD officer — seen as the possible gunmen. (Also: Reggie Wright Jr., head of security for Death Row Records, may have had a hand in the planning phase as well.) As to whether this will actually go anywhere? It seems like every few years a new break in the case is trumpeted (see: here) without fulfilling expectations, and this latest round of speculation is spurred by an awfully scant amount of actual details. Once the secretive “new information†is revealed, though, that could all change.
