At the opening of the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s new facility on Friday, Joel and Ethan Coen, beloved directors of True Grit, let a few details about their next project slip while talking onstage with director Noah Baumbach. “You’re working on a movie now that has quite a bit of music in it,†Baumbach said to them, apparently privy to some information. Ethan Coen confirmed it: “Yeah, it will be mostly live, I think,†he said. Joel elaborated: “We’re working on a movie now that has music in it, but it’s pretty much all performed live, single instrument,†he said. The details are still vague, but here are a few other hints: “Ethan suggested their new film was ‘kind of like Margot at the Wedding,’ Baumbach’s 2007 film,†Indiewire reports. Later, Joel added: “In stories that we’re coming up with ourselves, we write for specific people, although I have to say, the [music-related] thing we’re doing now, we’re not writing specifically for any of the parts, which is unusual for us.†Indiewire believes this is “a brand-new project,†but it wouldn’t be the first rumored Coen Brothers film not to make it to fruition.
