Kristen Wiig Gets a Restraining Order from Bugs Bunny

It’s been a big year for Kristen Wiig: Bridesmaids has turned into a summer smash, she was one of the funniest things about alien spoof Paul, and PETA named her sexiest female vegetarian of the year. As if all that weren’t enough, the SNL funny lady is also currently starring in Cartoon Network’s reboot of The Looney Tunes Show, supplying the voice of Bugs Bunny’s gal pal, Lola Bunny. The producers of Looney Tunes are clearly trying to nab kiddies and their parents with a mulit-pronged, multi-generational approach. First, they hire Wiig and a few other hip celebs for key vocal roles (Fred Armisen is the new Speedy Gonzales; Futurama legend Billy West is Elmer Fudd). Second, they modernize the show by reimagining Merry Melodies as comedic music-video spoofs. (A few weeks ago, the show had Elmer Fudd going all Marvin Gaye over grilled cheese.) And third, they put in jokes that only the parents will get: For example, in this clip they’ve gone and turned Wiig’s Lola into a semi-crazed Bugs stalker. Eh, WTF, doc?!

Dubbed “We Are in Love,†the latest Merry Melodies video — making its premiere right here on Vulture — lacks the emotional intensity (and flames) of Rihanna and Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie.†But the Lola-Bugs relationship portrayed here does involve lots of unwanted stalking and hints that Lola will do anything in order to get her paws on Bugs and his, um, carrot. Parents needn’t worry, however: As with the Shrek franchise or, going way back, Rocky & Bullwinkle, the more risqué jokes are designed to make adults giggle while safely flying over the heads of little ones. Unless, of course, your offspring happen to know the definition of the term “restraining order.†And in case you’re wondering, yes, Wiig does her own singing in this clip, dueting with Jeff Bergman (a.k.a. Bugs). The video will air during tomorrow night’s episode of The Looney Tunes Show (8 p.m., Cartoon Network).
