In the trailer for 50/50 opening Friday, Seth Rogen tells his cancer-battling friend (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) that he’ll be okay because “every celebrity beats cancer!†then lists off “that guy from Dexter†and Lance Armstrong. Seth Rogen’s characters do this all the time: Maybe he’s improvising, maybe he writes these lines, maybe it’s just a product of being a part of the big, happy Apatow family, but nearly all of his characters turn to movie, TV, and other pop-culture references to drive home their points.
