Whither the Matt Damon–Ben Affleck partnership? It was recently announced that Matt Damon would make his directorial debut on a film he’d scripted with John Krasinski, and while that’s all well and good, it seemed like Damon had traded one half of his Oscar-winning duo for another tall, lanky actor-writer. But there is hope! Damon tells GQ that he and Affleck will collaborate again on a biopic of mobster Whitey Bulger that Affleck will direct and Damon will star in (and if that sounds like familiar territory for Damon, it’s because Jack Nicholson’s character in The Departed was pretty much based on Bulger). “There are a couple of competing [Whitey Bulger] movies and I don’t think it’s been announced yet that we’re doing it,†Damon says. “But the sooner it’s announced the better, just because everyone else will back off, hopefully.†Still, don’t expect the two to actually sit down and write the script together like they used to — Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter has that job.
