Rob Corddry is walking the AV Club through the third season of Childrens Hospital. In the first installment, he talks about the benefits of being a joke- vs. story-driven show:
Because we’re a joke-driven show, we really try and craft these jokes. And not only come up with the best joke we can, which is what everybody tries to do, but our goal, and this is sort of impossible, is to write a new joke. Because they’ve all been written. Every joke feels kind of familiar, part of why you laugh at it. But sometimes we’ve said, “Wow, I’ve never heard that kind of joke before.†And that’s our goal.
That’s a pretty cool goal. Corddry also talks about the severe pains of wearing clown make-up 24/7 and dealing with the parents of child actors, plus how he knows when things are getting too zany for the world of Childrens Hospital. Jerking someone off in bed with a crutch: not too zany. Doing it while wearing a lab coat: too zany. It’s a fine line.
