Unsurprisingly, the MPAA has officially tagged British director Steve McQueen’s Shame (which apparently features a lot of full-frontal nudity from star Michael Fassbender’s sex-addict character) with an NC-17 rating. The distinction isn’t a problem for distributor Fox Searchlight, which doesn’t plan to appeal for an R rating. “I think NC-17 is a badge of honor, not a scarlet letter,†said company president Steve Gilula. “It’s not a film that everyone will take easily, but it certainly breaks through the clutter and is distinctive and original. It’s a game changer.†(Not to mention buzz generator.) And really, any teen interested in seeing it is probably bold enough to ask some old stranger at the movie theater to buy him or her a ticket.
