Whatever happened to How I Spent My Summer Vacation, a Mexico-set action movie starring Mel Gibson that he finished filming just months before those damaging voice mails leaked back in the summer of 2010? Unexpectedly, it popped up on Deadline today with the new title Get the Gringo, a brand-new trailer, and a heavily spun release plan: After Gibson and director Adrian Grunberg were unable to entice studios to pick up the movie for theatrical distribution, it’ll now premiere on DirecTV on May 1, with an expansion to other home-video and on-demand services later in the summer. Gibson’s last project, The Beaver, failed to gross a million dollars last spring; can an action movie sold completely on his name improve on that?
