After several superfluous mini-teasers, the actual, honest-to-goodness teaser trailer for Looper is out, and if you didn’t have all its striking imagery spoiled by those bite-size promos, there’s a lot to like here. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a contract killer with a novel way of dispatching his victims: They’re sent back in time from the future, so there’s no way to finger Gordon-Levitt or his clients for the crimes. All that goes out the window, though, when Gordon-Levitt’s newest prey turns out to be his future self (Bruce Willis) … and if you’re wondering how Gordon-Levitt could plausibly play a younger Bruce Willis, the answer appears to be “facial prosthetics and a lot of attitude.†It’s an intriguing premise, but more promising is how director Rian Johnson has come up with so many visually twisty ways to film it. When the camera circles Gordon-Levitt in a vertiginous but carefully controlled loop, you might imagine you’re seeing the second coming of Inception, and who can get mad at that?
