The Master’s trailers would lead you to believe Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest is another incredibly intense film in the vein of There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights. And it very well may be, but The Playlist also reports from the Venice Film Festival that The Master will surprise “those who expected some kind of Scientology-skewering treatise.†In a press conference, Anderson boiled the film down as such: “I think we were just trying to tell a love story between these guys,†meaning Philip Seymour Hoffman’s religion-creator and Joaquin Phoenix’s drifter. Hoffman eventually added: “I don’t think they see something in each other, they feel something in each other.†Sounds like PTA might have the greatest straight man/straight man love story since The Shawshank Redemption on his hands.
