A year ago, we reported that Dan Fogelman’s Imagine had been put in turnaround by Warner Bros., after Steve Carell dropped out. Well, the film is back on and will instead be independently financed. The film centers on Al Pacino as an aging rock star who continues to tour playing only the hits. That is until he finds a decades-old letter John Lennon wrote him and decides to turn over a new leaf, reconnect with his son (Jeremy Renner in Carell’s old role), and become friends with a hotel manager (Julianne Moore). The film, which will begin shooting next spring, is Fogelman’s first stab at directing, after a very successful career writing movies like Cars, Guilt Trip, and Crazy, Stupid, Love. Considering the acting talent signed on, Fogelman is probably both pumped and completely frightened that Pacino might just start hoo-ah-ing, as Pacino does, and ruin multiple takes and boom mikes.
