A reboot of the National Lampoon’s Vacation franchise centered around son Rusty Griswold and his family has been in development for a years, and now, the film’s directors have revealed to Collider that Vacation will be filming this summer with Ed Helms starring as Rusty. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Sam Weir from Freaks and Geeks!), who scripted Horrible Bosses and next weekend’s Steve Carell vehicle The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, began writing the script in 2009 and they’ll be making their directorial debut on the movie, as well.
Helms was in talks to star last year, but this is the first we’ve heard of him officially signing on. Daley revealed that filming will start in June in Atlanta and New Mexico. Daley also says they’re in talks to have cast members from the previous Vacation films back without specifying who, but he mentioned plans to THR last year to bring Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo onboard to play Clark and Ellen Griswold as meddlesome grandparents. Neither Chase nor D’Angelo have signed on yet. Now that Chevy Chase is free of his Community commitment, he certainly has the time to appear in the movie - that is if he’s not too busy playing Clark Griswold in Old Navy commercials.
