This year’s Cannes jury was unusually stacked with Hollywood insiders — foreman Steven Spielberg presided over a group that included Nicole Kidman and Ang Lee — but today, they handed the Palme d’Or to the very opposite of a studio film, Abdellatif Kechiche’s sex-soaked, three-hour lesbian epic Blue Is the Warmest Color. There were still some more traditional picks in there: The Coen brothers took home the runner-up Grand Prize for their folk music dramedy Inside Llewyn Davis, and Nebraska’s Bruce Dern beat out heavy favorite Michael Douglas for the Best Actor trophy. Meanwhile, The Past’s Berenice Bejo (Oscar-nominated for The Artist) won Best Actress, Amat Escalante took Best Director honors for the divisive Heli, Hirokazu Koreeda won a Jury Prize for Like Father, Like Son, and Zhangke Jia was awarded Best Screenplay for A Touch Of Sin.
