Bret McKenzie, the non-sideburned half of Flight of the Conchords, is writing his first movie. The comedian/actor/musician tells Collider that he’s in the early stages of writing a script for “a fairy tale comedy musical, sort of akin to Labyrinth or something like that … with singing dragons and monsters and stuff.†James Bobin, who McKenzie has worked with on Flight of the Conchords and The Muppets, is helping to develop the script, but McKenzie is writing it solo. McKenzie adds that the project is “live-action, so it would be a mixture of The Muppets and The Princess Bride.â€
Bret McKenzie recently finished working as music supervisor on the sequel Muppets Most Wanted, a title he also held on the previous Muppets film, which netted him an Oscar win for Best Original Song. He’ll next be seen in Napoleon Dynamite co-creator Jerusha Hess’s next film, Austenland, and the new Hobbit movie. Later this month, he and Jemaine Clement are headlining Funny or Die’s comedy tour, The Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival, as Flight of the Conchords alongside fellow headliner Dave Chappelle.
