You’ve read a bunch about Miley Cyrus’s performance at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards. Every media outlet wrote about it, and it dominated a hearty part of Monday’s social media conversation. Vulture’s music critic, Jody Rosen, had a very specific take on the whole thing — identifying race (not sexuality) as the most interesting and problematic aspect of Cyrus’s act and placing it within the context of the American minstrelsy tradition. Of course, bringing race into any conversation results in many outraged and fraught responses.
