The BBC has announced that, as many predicted, Peter Capaldi will replace Matt Smith to become Doctor Who’s twelfth Doctor Who. Host Zoë Ball revealed the much anticipated news during a half-hour live special that included interviews with Smith and head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat. Capaldi is best known for playing the profoundly foul-mouthed political operative Malcolm Tucker on the BBC’s The Thick of It and the show’s very funny movie spinoff, In the Loop. (He also recently played a World Health Organization [W.H.O.] doctor in World War Z, which is cute and funny.) “It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer, but it’s been so fantastic,†said Capaldi, who identified himself as a “lifelong†Who fan. He also went on to attribute the series’ years of success to the fact that “every single viewer…took it into their heart. It belongs to all of us. Everyone made Doctor Who.†Capaldi is expected to take up his new role as the Time Lord after Smith makes his final appearance in this year’s Christmas special.
