Gravity, the creature-less space thriller that broke box office records last weekend, continues to attract crowds. The latest from director Alfonso Cuarón once again topped the weekend box office, this time bringing in $44.2 million for a two-week total of $123.4 million. Meanwhile, the Tom Hanks real-life pirate drama Captain Phillips opened this weekend to a respectable $26 million. Sony’s kid-friendly sequel Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 earned $14.2 million, took the third spot and brought its three-week loot to $78 million. Despite the presences of Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, gambling flick Runner Runner brought in only $3.7 million for its second weekend, leaving its cumulative earnings at $14.2 million. Finally, the weekend’s other newcomer, the much-hyped Machete Kills rounded out the top five with $3.7 million. Judging by these numbers, we’d like to be the first to suggest Meatballs in Space. Any takers?
