If Kanye West’s moved on from 808s & Heartbreak, well, Justin Bieber decided to pick up where he left off. Don’t call it plagiarism; call it creative borrowing. He knows what’s going on. Just check out this album art:
Don’t let that “borrowing†make you write off “Heartbreaker†immediately. The song’s as much Kanye-influenced in melody as it is in cover art — Old Kanye, whose sadness echoed through “Love Lockdown.†That heartbroken Kanye is what New Bieber is going for: “Don’t tell me you’re my heartbreaker / ‘Cause, girl, my heart’s breaking.†If you’d like to match this song up to his extremely public breakup with Selena Gomez, you’re welcome to (†… despite all the imperfections of who I am, I still wanna be your man / I know it hasn’t been easy for us to talk with everyone being aroundâ€), but perhaps it’s better paired with our currently reigning sadcore champ Drake. You boys need to get (back) together and start commiserating, ASAP.
