A Jem and the Holograms Movie Is in the Works

Short-lived girl-power toon Jem and the Holograms will be the newest eighties (very eighties) animated series to get the feature-film treatment, according to an announcement on YouTube today. In the video, Director Jon M. Chu (GI Joe: Retaliation, both Justin Bieber documentaries) and producers Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) and Scooter Braun invite fans to help them make the live-action film, a task that includes writing music, designing costumes, and even casting. “Sort of like Kickstarter, but rather than asking for money, we’re asking for your creativity,†says Chu. (Take that, Rob Thomas.)

The original Hasbro classic cartoon chronicled the adventures of music company owner Jerrica Benton and her pink-haired singing alter ego Jem, front woman of the Holograms. Aspiring Jem-philes can submit audition tapes online via the official website, so if you’re a teenager who is improbably obsessed with an obscure cartoon made before you were born, now is the time to live out your fantasy!
