Despite getting renewed for a second season that was announced by Arsenio Hall and Jay Leno in late February, THR reports that CBS has now canceled The Arsenio Hall Show after only one season on the air. Hall’s second round at hosting the late night show premiered back in September, and despite bringing in ratings comparable to TBS’s Conan, The Arsenio Hall Show’s ratings have gone down since the premiere of Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show as well as David Letterman’s retirement announcement. Hall’s show aired on local affiliate stations owned by Turner Broadcasting, starting at the 11pm slot and in direct competition with local news and later The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Late Show. The Arsenio Hall Show makes the third late night talk show to either be canceled or announce the end of its run last month following TBS canceling The Pete Holmes Show and Chelsea Handler announcing the end of her E! talk show come August.
“When I started this adventure with CTD and Tribune, we all knew it would be a challenge,†Hall said in a statement. “I’m gratified for the year we’ve had and proud of the show we created. I’d like to thank everyone on the staff for rallying around me and striving to make the best possible show every night.†Here’s the statement CBSTVD released on Friday:
Unfortunately, The Arsenio Hall Show will not return for a second season; while there are many loyal fans of the show, the series did not grow its audience enough to continue. Arsenio is a tremendous talent and we’d like to thank him for all the hard work and energy he put into the show. We’d also like to thank Tribune and all our station group partners for their support of the show.
