The latest circus-themed season of FX’s American Horror Story features a scary murderous clown named Twisty, and according to THR, the negative depiction has moved real organization Clowns of America International to take a stand against clown prejudice in the media. “Hollywood makes money sensationalizing the norm,†said Clowns of America president Glenn Kohlberger in a statement. “They can take any situation no matter how good or pure and turn it into a nightmare.†Just to make his stance on Twisty clear, Kohlberger – who also goes by clown name Clyde D. Scope – added: “We do not support in any way, shape or form any medium that sensationalizes or adds to coulrophobia or ‘clown fear.’†Meanwhile, Clowns of America International has been suffering from falling numbers – “its aging base is made up of 2,500 clowns, down from 3,500 in 2004†– but maybe that’ll change once Louis C.K. and Zach Galfifianakis’s show Baskets premieres on FX in 2016.
