Last month, Netflix made a surprise move when they grabbed Tina Fey’s in-the-works NBC sitcom Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt starring Ellie Kemper. Speaking to Vulture, Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos revealed how exactly the series made the jump from network to streaming in just four days and also dropped some hints about what we can expect from the show when it premieres in March. Here’s how he broke down the agreement between NBC and Netflix to give Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt a new home:
And this was a strange opportunity where, usually when shows don’t make it, sometimes it has very little to do with the quality and it has everything to do with the time slot, the lead-in show, the time of year it came out. All those things. And Kimmy was one of those things that both the network and the producers were a little nervous about the time of the year it was coming. They didn’t have a complementary program to launch it with.
Sarandos went on to describe the series as being “more sitcom-y and network-y†than most Netflix shows and having “the same comic sensibility†as 30 Rock, only with a “slightly darker premise†and “slightly off-center, super serialized, and comedic and complex story lines.†Check out the rest of the interview over at Vulture.
