Thanks to solid buzz for Selma and Unbroken, many Oscar prognosticators thought this could be the first year in Academy history that two women were nominated for Best Director. With today’s nominations for the Directors Guild’s Outstanding Directorial Achievement award, that dream is looking less likely: Both Ava DuVernay and Angelina Jolie were left out in favor of Alejandro Iñárritu, Clint Eastwood, Richard Linklater, Morten Tyldum, and Wes Anderson, with the latter three receiving their first DGA nominations. DuVernay at least can content herself with the knowledge that Selma’s screener snafu didn’t affect Oscar votes, while Jolie will have to resign herself to the fact that at least she’s still Angelina freaking Jolie.Â
