The Mindy Project may be moving to a very trendy new neighborhood: Hulu. While Fox isn’t commenting, Vulture hears the network has decided not to renew Mindy Kaling’s critically acclaimed comedy for a fourth season — a not entirely unexpected decision given the low ratings for both it and lead-in New Girl. But the good news for fans of the show is that online streaming giant Hulu has expressed a serious interest in the show and may be willing to pick up two more seasons of Mindy. (The seasons would most likely be 12 or 13 episodes, as is standard on cable and streaming.) No deals are in place, in part because Mindy producer Universal Television can’t begin any negotiations with other suitors until Fox officially cancels the show — and our sources say the network hasn’t made that call to Universal yet. Hulu also declined comment on any potential interest in Mindy when Vulture contacted the online player last week. It’s worth keeping in mind that talks between Universal and Hulu could easily fall apart if the two sides can’t agree on the right fee for the show. But if the deal gets done — and it seems likely, as of now, that it will, our sources say — it will be the latest big acquisition for Hulu. The streaming network just signed on to become the online home of AMC’s upcoming spinoff of The Walking Dead and reruns of Seinfeld and Empire.
