While accepting The Jinx’s award for best documentary or nonfiction series at the Creative Arts Emmys this weekend Andrew Jarecki read aloud a passage of an email sent by Robert Durst during the series’ run on HBO. Apparently, Durst knew he was toast before the show’s gripping finale even aired: According to Jarecki, Durst admitted, “I’m going to watch episode six and then decide if I’m going to Cuba.†(Durst was arrested the day before the finale aired, in New Orleans, which had recently begun offering flights to Cuba.) “He didn’t go because he was arrested,†Jarecki added. “And that’s testament to the power of television.†Fittingly, Jarecki did not reveal the timeline of how the email ended up in his possession, or how long he’d waited before sharing it.
