Deadline reports that Patrick Dempsey, freed from his Grey’s Anatomy commitment by an errant truck, is in final talks to join the cast of the upcoming Bridget Jones’ Baby. His role is unknown, but it will probably be somebody very handsome. As you may be able to guess from the title, the film will concern the wanton sex goddess’s adventures in motherhood. Renée Zellweger and Colin Firth are already onboard, as is the original film’s director Sharon Maguire; Firth’s inclusion suggests that the movie will depart substantially from Helen Fielding’s third Bridget Jones novel, which revealed that Mark Darcy had died in the gap between books. The only Bridget Jones mainstay who won’t be returning is Hugh Grant, leading to speculation that Dempsey’s character would take Daniel Cleaver’s place in another love triangle — possibly as the father of the baby? If so, good news for the baby: Patrick Dempsey’s one of our top people. Our top person, really.
