At the beginning of (and throughout) every month, Amazon Prime and Amazon Instant Video add new movies and TV shows to their libraries. Some of these may also have previously been on Amazon, only to have been removed and then added back. Feel free to note anything we’ve left out in the comments below.
Watch It Again (and Again and Again): Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry joined forces to make this head-trip of romantic drama about falling in and out of (and back in) love. Home to one of Jim Carrey’s best dramatic roles — and great work from Kate Winslet, Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst, and Tom Wilkinson — Eternal Sunshine follows a complicated premise, in which people can choose delete their memories, far enough down the rabbit hole to end up somewhere eerie, honest, and wonderful. Available October 1.
Madcap Adventures: Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985)
The kind of movie that’s either definitely for you or definitely not, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure has all the madcap ’80s non sequiturs you could want. Plus, it features on one of Danny Elfman’s first scores. Available October 1.
The One Amazon Wants You to Watch: Red Oaks (Season 1)
Amazon loves the ’80s, apparently, and wants to make sure you spend as much time as possible in the world of feathered hair and short-shorts. Directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) and executive-produced by Steven Soderbergh, Red Oaks is a coming-of-age story about David Myers (Craig Roberts), who happens to be spending the summer at a tennis club in New Jersey. The pilot’s already up on Amazon, if you want to see if the retro sex-comedy vibe is right for you. Available October 9.
Capitol Games: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 (October 23)
Jennifer Lawrence glowers, Elizabeth Banks flounces, Liam Hemsworth pouts, Julianne Moore has gray hair, Josh Hutcherson is half-dead for most of the movie — and wait, Natalie Dormer is in this? Part one of two (or, really, part three of four), this is the moodiest entry in an already-brutal dystopian YA canon, as the characters spend most of the time moving to the places they need to be, emotionally and physically, in time for the finale. And, yes, we’re far enough into the Hunger Games movies to need a colon and an em dash to write this title! Available October 23.
Oh No, Youths: While We’re Young (2015)
One of two Noah Baumbach movies about youth to premiere this year, While We’re Young takes the older generation’s perspective, as Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts struggle to keep up with a younger, hipper couple, Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried. As in much of Baumbach’s work, the characters can feel a little grating, but he’s become a master of sending up his leads, never more so than when Watts and Stiller get hilariously high at an ayahuasca ceremony. Available October 29.
Farm to Table: Tom at the Farm (2015)
If you’re a fan of claustrophobic, homoerotic, psychosexual thrillers, then you have definitely heard of Xavier Dolan, the Québécois director who made his name with emotionally explosive, often transgressive work, such as Laurence Always and Mommy. If you’re not, then Tom at the Farm is as good a place to start as any. The film has screwdriver of a premise — a man visits his deceased boyfriend’s family’s home, though most of the family didn’t know he was gay — and digs deeper with each turn of the plot. The result, as our Bilge Ebiri noted, is “ragged, explosive, and often moving.†Available October 29.
